Introducing the New Bone Health Clinic at Crete Area Medical Center

Osteoporosis and low bone mass affect 44 million men and women aged 50 and older. This condition puts men and women at greater risk of breaking or fracturing a bone. More than one in four women over the age of 65 have the disease. Symptoms are virtually non-existent, and a person may not be affected by it until they break a bone. At Crete Area Medical Center (CAMC), we understand the importance of specialized care in managing this condition. That's why we're excited to introduce our new Bone Health Clinic, which will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, led by Kelsey Baxa, APRN-FNP, one of our family practice providers.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that reduces bone strength and causes the bones to become weak so that even mild stresses can cause a fracture, typically to the hips, spine and wrists. About half of people older than 50 years old will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture, also called a fragility fracture. People who sustain a fragility fracture have double the risk of suffering an additional fracture within the next two years. Osteoporosis can cause painful spinal fractures, called compression fractures, and can lead to what is referred to as "hunchback." It can also be debilitating and even fatal.

While many patients experience these symptoms, others may not show any signs at all. This makes early diagnosis and management essential.
