Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at Grand Island Regional Medical Center: Ashley Johnson

Ashley Johnson, RN of Grand Island Regional Medical Center was recently honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is bestowed upon nurses for their super-human efforts performed every day.

Ashley was nominated by Victoria Eudy. Victoria writes:

"Words cannot express how grateful our family is for Ashley's care. Ashley took the worst possible pain we could imagine and made it manageable with her hospitality, candor, warmth and sympathy.

As the patient's daughter, I don't think I could have gotten through this without Ashley. It's like she has to handle three extra patients as well--me, her son and her son-in-law"

Eudy lauded her efforts to communicate thoughtfully with the family during a time of tragedy.

"Ashle spent so much time with us. She pulled up a chair and we had comforting conversations that helped us get through. Mom is unable to talk about her kindness without choking up. I, and the rest of our family, will think of Ashley's warmth and kindness for the rest of our lives. Thank you, Ashley."

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
