Know the signs of a heart attack and seek immediate care
A heart attack happens when blood flow to your heart suddenly becomes blocked. This prevents your heart from getting the oxygen it needs. Without the oxygen carried to your heart through blood flow, your heart starts to die. Quickly restoring blood flow is important to save lives.
Warning Signs & Symptoms
- Chest discomfort or pain – usually in the center of your chest; it can feel like an uncomfortable pressure or squeezing, this may come and go
- Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
- Shortness of breath
- Sweating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
These symptoms are the same for men and women. However, women are more likely to experience shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
You could have all of the above symptoms or only one or two symptoms and still be having a heart attack. No matter how many symptoms you have, it’s important to seek treatment right away.
