My Approach to Care

To me the most important part of the care I provide to my patients is being a good listener. This helps me provide the best care, answer each patient’s questions and make sure their concerns are addressed.

As a neurologist, I care for patients of all ages facing various health concerns such as:

  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Parkinson’s disease, tremors and other movement disorders
  • Dementia and memory disorders
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome and other neuroimmunology disorders
  • Autonomic nervous system disorders

Sometimes I feel a healthcare provider is in a bit of a hurry or is not truly listening to me. I have never felt that with the Bryan Neurology nurses or Dr. Vavra. And I appreciate that.

Once in a while I think the provider should speak with the spouse/family member separately. The patient will (deny) cover up bad experiences or dismiss them as not relevant. In the case of a male stroke victim, the mood swings can get dangerous if not generally a heavy burden each day. If the Providers have regular staff meetings, could they possibly discuss what a family members can do for themselves as a balance to the anxiety they go through on a daily basis. Al-Anon meetings are not the answer.

Yes, I was extremely happy with Dr. Vavra. He was very knowledgeable, very polite and considerate. He explained things very well. And his staff there in the front desk and office area are just absolutely fabulous. They even laughed at my dumb jokes. So yes, I give the office and Dr. Vavra a 1 to 10. I will give them a 12. I was apprehensive about this appointment because I was seeing someone totally new. My wife and I listened to the clip on Dr. Vavra's practice website. At my appointment Dr. Vavra came across exactly as he did on the clip. He was open, asked questions and listened to our questions. He was friendly, pleasant and encouraging. I am very reassured now that I am his patient.

For having an appointment early in the day, it seemed like it took a little while longer than normal to see Dr. Vavra, but oh well. It's okay. Also, Dr. Vavra knew the medical history from what is in my chart. I chose Yes, Somewhat for knowledge of medical history because some of my medical history was from 34 years ago, where medical records might not be available anymore. We were completely okay with needing to explain the medical situations I had 34 years ago. Thank you for the appointment, the explanations, the treatment during the appointment, and the plan for the future. Everything was wonderful!

It was my sisters first visit to this provider in the clinic. He was very thorough and explained what was happening with my sister. He was patient with my sister and very calming with her. He took time to explain her MRI to me so I better understood what was happening with her brain. I was very impressed with him and the whole clinic

I appreciate Dr. Vavra's willingness to answer any questions I had and that he took time to get to know me and my medical history before seeing me for the first time. My nurse was timely, efficient at her job, and friendly, and the front desk staff were helpful and prompt as usual.
