Frequently Asked Questions about Wigs

What’s the average cost of a wig?

  • Costs differ based on construction, features and material.
  • Synthetic wigs range between $150-$600. Natural hair wigs start at $700.

What materials make up the wigs?

  • Full Synthetic
    • Pros: Minimal maintenance, lower cost, permanent color, style memory
    • Cons: no heat, permanent style, tangles easier, no color alterations can be made, warmer than human hair, fabric is shinier
    • Care: Wash every 6-10 wearings, daily detangler and more frequent refurbishings
  • Heat Friendly & Synthetic Blends
    • Pros: More natural texture, not as shiny, cost is lower than human hair, permanent color, multiple styling options
    • Cons: should not be worn around open flames or hot ovens, tangles easier, requires more maintenance than traditional synthetic, color cannot be altered, warmer than human hair
    • Care: wash every 6-10 wearings, can be heat styled at 280 degrees, ends that rub against skin or clothes will fray and need to be flat ironed, professional refurbishing every 2 months recommended
  • Human Hair
    • PROS: Most natural texture, look and feel is virtually undetectable, Unlimited styling options, can be customized with color, etc. Cooler than synethetic, longest life span
    • Cons: investment, reacts to the environment like natural hair, no style memory and requires restyling after washing
    • Care: wash every 6-10 wearings with recommended products, air dry to mostly dry, then blow dry and style with proper products
    • Deep conditioning from a professional is recommended every 23 months

Does insurance cover wigs?

  • It varies. Some cover up to a certain dollar amount or percentage. Either way, we do not submit insurance on your behalf. You would pay upfront, and then submit the receipt and a doctor’s referral for potential reimbursement.
  • We recommend calling your insurance company and asking if you have coverage for the following CPT (current procedural terminology) codes:
    • A9282 (most common)
    • D5924
    • S8095

When should I have a consultation? Should I wait until I start to lose my hair?

  • While it is personal preference, our stylist recommends a consultation before any hair loss you may experience. For some patients, having something ‘ready’ when that moment occurs gives peace of mind. Sometimes it can take a couple of visits to find the perfect piece for you, so allowing time beforehand can be beneficial. Some patients share that meeting with someone upfront makes the hair loss less daunting.
  • If you have already experienced hair loss or are starting to experience regrowth, we are happy to meet you where you are.

Do you service wigs that weren’t purchased from Bravadas?

  • Yes. However, many factors can impact the look and feel of your wig. Wigs require special maintenance and care to keep them looking great. If incorrect products or styling methods have been used previously, we may not be able to restore your wig to its previous state.

Do I have to have cancer to see the Bravadas stylist or buy a wig?

  • No. We welcome clients experiencing hair thinning or loss due to any factors, whether they are genetic, medical or the result of other underlying factors.

How do I take care of my wig?

  • The Bravadas team is pleased to provide comprehensive maintenance and care and to equip you with the at-home knowledge and tools you will need for routine care. As you can imagine, the specifics of wig maintenance and care may vary depending on the type of wig you have. Human and synthetic hair both typically require special shampoo and other maintenance products. When you purchase a wig, we will provide you with complete instructions and guidelines. Bravadas also has several how-to videos on their website.
