Clients at Bryan Independence Center benefit from the expertise of professionals trained to treat both substance abuse and mental illness conditions. As a regional leader in mental health care, we are uniquely qualified to help our clients who are in the grip of a dual diagnosis of substance abuse and a mental health issue such as anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder.

Treating substance use and mental health issues at the same time is the most effective way to help our clients.

Sometimes substance abuse occurs as a result of coping skills clients use to alleviate the symptoms of mental illness or side effects of medications. Other times problems began with substance abuse and lead to biological changes in the brain causing mental health issues or symptoms that mimic mental illnesses.

A Comprehensive Approach

Treating both conditions requires a comprehensive approach. Because of this, we structure our treatment services in a variety of ways to address the needs of dually diagnosed clients. On our clinical team, we currently have 20 licensed counselors, 12 of whom have a license or provisional license to treat both mental health issues and substance use issues.

There are dually licensed clinicians at all levels of care. Bryan Independence Center registered nurses are skilled in providing care to clients with mental health and substance abuse diagnoses, and provide education to clients and their families about medications and other interventions to manage the symptoms of multiple disorders.

Clients receiving medications are monitored for improvement in symptoms and any possible side effects. We also have psychiatrists who provide medication management and psychiatric care for clients in our services.

Dual Treatment Plans

Our treatment plans address the interrelationship between the dual diagnoses. We provide education to clients as part of our weekly lecture schedule and treatment planning process about dual disorders. We also include issues with dual diagnoses into our relapse prevention and safety planning processes. The dual issues are addressed as part of treatment and as part of the discharge planning process.

Our Focus is on the Whole Person

At Bryan Independence Center, we focus on the whole person. Our expertise in both addiction and mental health issues allow us to individualize care to meet the needs of each client.
