If you have severe depression that has not responded to medication or psychotherapy, or you are not able to take medications, ECT may be an effective treatment for you.

What is ECT?

ECT is a specialized procedure that uses electricity to treat severe depression and other mental illnesses. It helps people who cannot use or have not responded to medication or psychotherapy. It also has been found to help individuals in life-threatening situations such as risk of suicide.

What does ECT do?

ECT causes chemical changes in the brain that medication or psychotherapy were unable to change. It also facilitates new growth of brain cells in specific areas of the brain that are affected by depression. These changes can help end an episode of depression or relieve other symptoms related to other mental disorders.

How effective is ECT?

ECT is the most effective therapy for treatment-resistant depression. Research shows remission rates are as high as 80-85% for treatment resistant depression.

Who provides ECT treatment at Bryan?

A psychiatrist who has certification to provide ECT treatment. Treatment is provided in the electroconvulsive therapy clinic at Bryan West Campus.

How do I know if ECT can benefit me?

An exam will determine if ECT is an appropriate treatment for you. During the exam, you will be asked about:

  • Your medical and mental health history
  • Your current medications (some medications should not be taken during ECT treatment)
  • Your ability to handle anesthesia (this helps the patient sleep during the ECT procedure)
  • Any previous ECT treatment(s)

How long is ECT treatment?

The number of treatment sessions varies for each patient. A plan will be created for your specific needs. The average number of treatment sessions is 12-18. Treatment is provided n Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Is ECT covered by insurance?

Yes, many insurance plans cover ECT. This does need pre-authorization. Here are the steps to this process:

  • Meet with our doctor for a consult (evaluation) to determine if ECT is appropriate for you.
  • The Bryan authorization team will work with your insurance company for pre-authorization.
  • If approved, we will contact you to let you know how to schedule your appointment.
