A DEXA scan is a test that measures the density of bones. As we age, some medicines and diseases can cause bone density loss. DEXA scans are an extremely low dose x-ray exam of the hip and spine. From these measurements our board certified radiologists can determine your risk factors for developing osteoporosis and hip fractures.
You could have significant bone density loss or osteoporosis without knowing it. Find out with this simple test. Then you'll know the steps to take for your bone health.
How DEXA Works
The DEXA exam takes about 30 minutes. It's painless and non-invasive. You can wear your regular clothes for this exam as long as you are not wearing anything that contains metal. To straighten the spine during the exam, your legs will rest on a sponge. You will need to hold very still. Once relaxed and in position, the equipment’s arm will slowly move across your body. The machine does not touch you. Your licensed radiologic technologist will be by your side throughout the exam. Please let your technologist know if you have any questions.
Preparing for Your DEXA Scan
Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan. Dress comfortably. Because metal items (zippers, metal buttons, snaps, etc.) will interfere with the imaging, you might be asked to wear a hospital gown.
Be sure to let your technologist know if:
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
- You have had any spinal or hip surgery
- You have had a recent nuclear medicine scan or other recent x-rays where you have received contrast
Please arrive 15 minutes before your exam time. Remember to bring a photo ID, your insurance card, medication lists and any additional forms provided by your doctor.
After Your DEXA Scan
Our board certified radiologist reads your exam. The results are sent to your doctor within 24 hours. You can view your results online through MyChart. If you don't have MyChart, learn more and sign up online today.
