Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a way to obtain images from inside your body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image.
Our expert sonographers and ultrasound technicians perform ultrasounds on many areas of the body including:
- Abdomen, including obstetrical exams for women and the fetus
- Breast
- Gallbladder
- Renal
- Testicular
- Thyroid
- Various others
How Ultrasounds Work
Ultrasound images are captured in real time, can show movement of internal tissues and organs, and allow doctors to see blood flow and other functions. This can help diagnose many conditions and can help a doctor determine the source of pain, swelling or infection in many parts of the body.
During the ultrasound, you will usually lay on your back. Gel is applied to the area being examined to see structures within the body. A certified ultrasound sonographer will perform your exam. Ultrasounds usually last less than an hour.
Because ultrasound provides real-time images, it also can be used to guide procedures such as needle biopsies, which are used to gather cells from organs for lab tests.
